With so many of us now opting to be our own boss, knowing how to juggle a busy home life and a business is a complete necessity. Whilst some of us thrive on the pressure of a jam-packed day, others need a boost to help them power through.
That’s why we’re here with 3 simple tips to help you manage your work life balance effectively.
Plan Your Day Like The Boss You Are
In fact, plan out your whole week or month. The secret to success is having a good plan and whether you’re trying to cram in some extra hours at work or need to find time to take your kids to their after school classes, writing it all down can help you to stay on top.
Get yourself a really good diary and jot down absolutely everything you need to get done. Set aside specific times for little jobs like checking emails and more important tasks like spending time with friends and family.
If you know there are some important dates coming up, get them down ASAP. Whilst this isn’t the most spontaneous way to live, you’ll be amazed at how productive and balanced your life is.
Top tip: Remember to write everything in pencil, so when your plans inevitably change, you can keep your calendar neat and easy to understand.
Define The Lines Between Work And Family
Trying to maintain a good work-life balance in any job is a tough ask but if you run your own business from home, it can be even harder.
When you need to both work and live your life in one building, (and sometimes one room), the lines between business and family are often blurred. Whatever disturbs your concentration at home, make sure you set some clear rules and boundaries when working.
- Ensure your partner and your children understand that certain hours are for working only and that you cannot be disturbed during this time.
- If possible, designate a separate area for working and ensure you have a comfortable chair and desk to work at. If you don’t have the luxury of a spare room, find a quieter area of your house and map out a little space for business only tasks.
- Avoid working in a room where there is a TV and restrict the amount of time you can spend on social media during working hours.
Boundaries are vital when managing a family and a business, and with a little discipline you can create a harmonious balance that works for everyone.
Will It Take Less Than 5 Minutes? Get It Done Now
One of the biggest problems you’ll face when trying to manage family life and your business is that your productivity will eventually slip. When this happens, work seems to take up your entire week, seemingly leaving you with no time to spend with loved ones.
Want to combat this right away? At the beginning of each day, tackle any tasks that will take you five minutes or less. Taking care of all the fiddly bits at the beginning of your day will leave you with a clearer mind-set. Then, you can focus on two or three of your bigger tasks without a million other things swirling around in your head.
It’s these little tasks that start to pile up over time, leaving us feeling drained and ruining our work-life balance. If you can tick it off of your to-do list in a few minutes, why wait until tomorrow?
